**MILK AND IRON** is a dark, poetic retelling of the biblical account of Jael and Sisera, following the events recorded in **Judges 4:17–22** and the victory poem in **Judges 5:24–27**.
The battle has turned, and Sisera—the commander of a defeated army—abandons his chariot and flees on foot. Exhausted, alone, and desperate for refuge, he reaches the tent of Jael. She steps out to meet him, invites him inside, and tells him not to be afraid.
The noise of war fades behind the tent walls.
When Sisera asks for water, Jael gives him milk. She covers him, conceals him, and allows the weary commander to believe that he has finally escaped those pursuing him. The warrior who commanded an army closes his eyes beneath her covering, unaware that the battle has followed him into the quiet.
The song draws its atmosphere from the contrast already present in the passage: a gentle invitation, a cup of milk, a place of shelter—and the iron waiting nearby.
The poetic account in Judges 5 remembers the moment with haunting repetition:
*At her feet he sank.*
*At her feet he fell.*
*Where he sank,*
*there he fell—dead.*
