LIKE A FURNACE is a dark, cinematic retelling of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah as described in Genesis 19:24–28.
The biblical account is brief but devastating: YHWH rains sulfur and fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah, overturning the cities, the entire plain, their inhabitants, and the vegetation of the land. Abraham later looks toward the region and sees smoke rising from the earth like the smoke of a furnace.
This song takes that short description and places the listener inside the catastrophe.
The peaceful morning gives way to a blinding flash. Fire descends from the sky. Buildings collapse. Streets erupt into panic as people run beneath falling stone, sulfur, smoke, and flame. The graphic details of blast waves, shattered bodies, blood, and physical destruction are theatrical visualizations of what such a violent overthrow might have looked and felt like—they are not presented as additional details supplied by Genesis itself.
The purpose is not to soften the passage or preach a theological conclusion, but to tell the story with the full weight and terror suggested by the text.
