Song Description

“They Didn’t Know It Yet” is a playful, high-energy trip back into the Late Bronze Age, when Egypt ruled much of the southern Levant, the poets of Ugarit were preserving the stories of Baal and Mot on clay tablets, and groups known to the Egyptians as the Shasu were roaming the deserts beyond imperial control.

At the center of the song are the mysterious Shasu of Yhw—a group mentioned in Egyptian inscriptions from roughly the same broad era as the Ugaritic Baal Cycle. The name Yhw is widely discussed by scholars because of its apparent connection with the divine name Yahweh, making these inscriptions some of the earliest known extra-biblical evidence associated with that name.

Exactly how the Shasu of Yhw relate to the people who later became Israel remains debated. They cannot simply be called “Israelites” with certainty, but some scholars have proposed that southern Shasu populations may have contributed to the religious or ancestral background of early Israel.

And that uncertainty is exactly where the song has its fun.

While kings build monuments, scribes record campaigns, Baal battles Mot in ancient poetry, and Pharaoh tries to keep his borders under control, a bunch of mobile desert people keep wandering through the historical record as if they have absolutely no idea how interesting future historians are going to find them.

Hence the chorus:

“They didn’t know it yet!”

The song deliberately mixes archaeology, ancient religion, Bronze Age history, and humor rather than treating the subject like a lecture. Pharaoh is frustrated, the scribes are taking notes, the Shasu keep moving, and somewhere in all that desert dust the name Yahweh has already appeared centuries before the biblical manuscripts that survive today.
