Meet Janice: An Uncensored Chat Bot That Stays Useful

Most consumer chatbots are trained to refuse first and answer second. Ask anything mildly spicy and you get the same evasive boilerplate. That is fine for a corporate help desk. It is useless in a real chat room where people want a straight answer about a difficult topic, a contested piece of history, or an opinion that has not been pre-sanitised. Janice is our answer to that problem.

What Janice is

Janice is an in-chat assistant available to every member of Sanctum Chamber. She lives inside our live chat, not on a separate page. You can mention her by name, ask a follow-up, and get a response in the same flow as any other room conversation. She remembers a short rolling context of what was just discussed, which means her answers actually fit the conversation she is in.

Why we built our own instead of using a stock bot

We tried the obvious thing first — drop a generic assistant into the room and call it done. It did not work. Generic assistants refuse to engage with questions our community actually asks, hallucinate when they think they know but do not, and have no idea what the site rules are. Building Janice in-house let us solve all three problems on our own terms.

  • Janice is told what she is and where she is. She knows she is the in-chat assistant of Sanctum Chamber, not a generic search engine, so her answers feel like a knowledgeable regular rather than a customer service script.
  • She is allowed to disagree with the user and to say so. Sycophancy is one of the worst failure modes of modern chatbots; we explicitly steer Janice away from it.
  • She has live access to the things she should know live — date, time, current news, results from games hosted on the site — and she falls back to the in-chat news wire instead of guessing when she does not know.
  • She knows the site rules. She will not help a user evade a ban or scrape private rooms.

What “uncensored” means here

Uncensored does not mean lawless. Janice still refuses to help with content that breaks our community rules, helps someone harm a child, or produces actual operational instructions for violence. What she will do, that most stock assistants will not, is give you a clear answer on contested cultural, historical, or political questions instead of refusing to engage. If you ask a hard question in good faith, you get a real reply.

Where Janice fits in our moderation stack

Janice is not a moderator. She does not issue bans. She does not silence members. Moderation is done by humans backed by an automated harassment/raid detection layer we call the Social Immune System. Janice is purely an assistant — a teammate the room can ask for help. That separation is deliberate. The moment a chat bot becomes both the advisor and the police officer, both jobs get worse.

If you want to try her, open live chat and address her by name in any room she is present in. She is currently free for everyone via a one-survey unlock that gives you two hours of unlimited Janice access. VIP members keep always-on access.
